As a UK dentist, your medical indemnity cover is one of the most important decisions you make for your career. Whether you’re feeling underserved by your current provider, looking for better value, or simply want to explore your options, switching has never been more straightforward, but it does require a little preparation.

At Densura, we make the process as smooth as possible. Here’s everything you need to know before requesting your tailored quote.

Why Dentists Are Switching

The medical indemnity landscape has evolved significantly. With more choice between insurers and indemnifiers than ever before, it’s entirely reasonable to ask: am I getting the protection that’s right for me?

Whether you’re a practice principal, an associate, or a specialist, the cover you carry should reflect your individual circumstances; your scope of practice, your working hours, your claims history, and your risk profile. A one-size-fits-all approach simply doesn’t cut it.

The Densura Quote Process: What to Expect

Your Medical Indemnity Insurance Quote Is Tailored for You

Unlike off-the-shelf policies, a Densura quote is personalised. That means we take the time to properly assess your situation before presenting a figure. As a result, please allow up to one week to receive your tailored quote once your application has been submitted.

This isn’t a delay, it’s due diligence. A quote that properly reflects your individual circumstances means you won’t face any surprises down the line.

What Information You’ll Need to Have to Hand

Before you begin your medical indemnity insurance quote application, gather the following. Having these details ready will make the process faster and avoid any back-and-forth:

  • Your GDC registration number
  • Your date of primary qualification and full registration date
  • Your scope of practice – what treatments and procedures you carry out
  • Weekly working hours and the number of weeks you work per year
  • Full address(es) and postcode(s) of your practice location(s)
  • Details of any previous indemnity providers – including any gaps in your professional protection
  • Previous complaints, claims, and case history – full disclosure is essential and ensures your cover is valid

You’ll also want to think through your working arrangements carefully. If you work across multiple locations, practise in more than one country, or carry out both medical and dental work, make sure you flag this at the outset.

If You Have a Previous Claim: The Letter of Good Standing

This is the part that catches many dentists off guard, so it’s worth planning ahead.

If you have any record of a previous claim, complaint, or case, you will need to obtain a Letter of Good Standing (also known as a full case history) from your current or previous indemnity provider. This document gives Densura the full picture of your claims history and is required to support your application.

Allow Plenty of Time

If your current provider is a defence union (such as the MDU, MPS/Dental Protection, or MDDUS), please be aware that Letters of Good Standing can take up to 15 working days to be issued. This is standard across the industry and is outside of Densura’s control.

Our advice: Request your Letter of Good Standing as early as possible, ideally at the same time as you begin your quote application. This way, both processes run in parallel and you avoid unnecessary delays to your switch.

What Happens If You Don’t Have a Clean History?

Having a previous claim does not automatically disqualify you. Many dentists with prior claims history obtain excellent cover. However, your application may be referred for additional review, during which our team will carefully assess the information provided. We will always aim to get back to you as promptly as possible.

Step-by-Step: How the Process Works

  1. Gather your information – use the checklist above to get everything in order
  2. Request your Letter of Good Standing – do this immediately if you have any previous claims (allow up to 15 working days from defence unions)
  3. Submit your quote application with Densura – our team will review your details
  4. Receive your tailored quote – this can take up to one week
  5. Review and accept – once you’re happy, we’ll confirm your cover and handle the transition

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Apply

  • If you have outstanding regulatory, licensing, registration body, criminal, or disciplinary investigations, you will need to speak with us directly before applying.
  • Qualified outside of the UK, but practicing in the UK? Learn more about the additional requirements we’ll need for your quote application here. This is especially relevant if you are working under the Educational and Clinical Support Plan (ECSP).
  • Any gaps in professional protection should be declared and explained, this protects you as much as it protects us.
  • Full disclosure of your claims and case history isn’t just a formality – providing accurate information ensures your cover is valid and enforceable when you need it most.
